Our Philosophy behind Monty’s Corner

  • Our Philosophy behind Monty’s Corner

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes forever for those around them. The world no longer looks the same. It’s not just a medical journey, it’s an emotional upheaval that affects parents, siblings, relatives, and friends alike.

Emotions shift rapidly after diagnosis. Everything becomes overwhelming. There are no right or wrong feelings, only real ones. While each medical journey is unique, the emotional responses often share common threads, regardless of background or location.

You and your child will experience one or more of these emotional feelings:

  • Shock and disbelief - "I just can’t believe it." "It can’t be true."
  • Denial - “There’s nothing wrong.” “My child doesn’t have cancer.”
  • Fear and uncertainty - “Will they be in pain?” “Will they survive?”
  • Loss of control - “We can’t cope with this.”
  • Anger - “Why my child?” “This shouldn’t happen to children.”
  • Resentment - “Why aren’t they getting better?”
  • Sadness and sorrow - “They were so healthy.” “We had so many plans.”
  • Blame and guilt - “If only we’d done something differently…”
  • Withdrawal and isolation - “Please leave me alone.” “I just need space.” (Common in older children)

These feelings are valid. Recognising them is the first step toward finding a way to cope that’s right for you and your child.

Our Approach to Emotional Wellbeing

Monty’s Corner was founded on the principles of emotional wellbeing and self-help. We believe in supporting children and families through gentle, creative strategies that promote resilience and healing.

Our philosophy includes:

  • Keeping an open mind – Positive thinking is helpful, but it’s okay to feel low.
  • Talking things through – Expressing emotions helps release tension.
  • Writing in a journal – A safe space to explore fears and worries.
  • Staying engaged – Boredom can lead to anxiety; minds need activity.
  • Releasing tension – Even a few minutes of relief can help.
  • Relaxation and visualisation – Techniques to ease fear and promote calm.
Based on these principles, we offer online activities for children undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment, and supportive resources for parents.

Who We Are

Monty’s Corner is a community-led support site developed in partnership with CCE Research Alliance, a UK-registered charity (No. 1130106).

The initiative is independently managed by its founding trustee (Dr Meltem Ocal Kogelbauer, PhD - meltem.kogelbauer@cce-researchalliance.com), who oversees all aspects of its development and outreach.

The Gold Ribbon

The Gold Ribbon - Childhood Cancers Awareness

The gold ribbon is the internationally recognised symbol for childhood cancer awareness. We include it at Monty’s Corner to honour children, families, and carers affected by childhood cancer around the world, and to acknowledge the global community working tirelessly for better treatments, support, and outcomes.
